When one thinks of luxury products the name Dior comes to mind
. In 1805 Christian Dior was born in Granville, Normandy a sea side town off the coast of France. His family wished that he would use his great people skills to become a diplomat but he always favored the world of the arts. He loved sketching. And wanted to do something in this vein. After finishing his education he opened an art gallery where he sold the work of many contemporary artists. Tragically he forced to close the gallery because his father lost the family business. Due to the unfortunate circumstances he had to go to work for someone else.
In 1938 he got a job working for the House of Robert Piquet. Later he joined the house where be and Pierre Balmain were the primary designers. In 1945 he had the good fortune to open his own establishment. His backer in this company was the cotton fabric magnate Marcel Boussa
In 1947 Dior created a totally new look called Corolle. Carmel Snow the editor in chief of Harpers Bazaar gave the line the name “The New Look”. His designs were very different for the times and all of the boxy looks of the World War II era were gone from his collection. The “New Look” was very feminine and fresh looking.
The new collection offered very feminine looks that had boned bustier bodices, fitted waists and petty coats. The dresses on the line flared out and gave emphasis to to the shape of the calves and ankles. At first there was a resistance to his look because his garments required so much fabric. People were just getting over the idea of less was better due to the rationing and shortages of fabrics during the War. But after a while people started getting use to the idea that the War was over and times were better. Then his garments became very well accepted. The “New Look” revolutionized women’s dresses and re-established Paris as the center of the fashion world.
Christian Dior died in 1957. After his death the house of Dior was taken over by Yves Saint -Laurent. He continued to head the house of Dior until he was stricken with mental health issues and forced to leave. In the 1960's Mark Bohan took over running the house of Dior. H is look was a much more conservative look which drove the line till 1988. In 1988 Italian designer Gianranco Ferre took over as head designer. He was given this post by Diors only son John Christian Dior.
Dior began to open boutiques around the world in such cities as New York, Hollywood, Las Vegas and Paris. The line became such a hot branded line that they began to manufacture their own products. Wth their many successes they started to add such items as shoes, perfumes, hats, scarves and handbags to the line. In today’s fashion world Dior Gowns and handbags have become a staple
Because of the success of their many products, Dior like many other companies is finding their products are being copied. It is not unusual to find replicas of their merchandise that has been made in China. This is especially true with handbags. So when buying a Dior handbag be sure to purchase it from an authorized dealer of Dior.
